I photographed…

… when Paris, highly symbolic icon of those years, appeared in the mountains to give witness to one’s own happiness. And a black cat, unnoticed*, on white paws, crossed Zakaria’s path through Europe, as if it wanted to use the unreality of the moment to tell of the journey’s further course.

It is a particular time in history to which the photographs lead viewers: Zwischenzeit (Interim) – The first decade. Of the 21st century. Of the third millennium.

Regarding the question, posed one day in a far-off future, about what was happening in Europe at this time, 100 photographs were to give viewers detailed, comprehensive and exclusive insights.

That was the thought that drove me on while photographing Zwischenzeit (Interim).

* I myself only noticed this detail when a blow-up of the photo to a previously unseen magnitude was mounted at the entrance to Sala 1 in Rome. Inattentiveness is the greatest enemy of photographs.

Vienna, Austria, 2008

Between 2004 and 2010 there was no moment in which a Zwischenzeit photo could not have been taken. Not even during the commissioned documentation of an orange-coloured Nike sport shoe’s sole at the reopening of a Hugo Boss store in central Vienna.

Minsk, Belarus, 2010

On 19 December 2010, work on Zwischenzeit (Interim) was completed. In Minsk, Belarus, on the day of presidential elections, on the evening of the violent assertion of the elections result, unexpectedly, with a single blow by a stick. Thirteen days before the end of the first decade, two days after the Tunisian street vegetable vendor, Mohamed Bouazizi, immolated himself, and a string of events was set in train that was to leave its mark on the second decade, the so-called Arab Spring.

… Search becomes a craving,
the iconoclastic storm of images, a restless drive.
Shadows line up in the mirror
of dark grounds free of sleep …
