Zwischenzeit is a personal view of the situation in Europe during the first decade of the 21st century, documented in 100 photographs.
Book Description

The photographic inventory, Zwischenzeit, made by the documentary photographer, Heinz Stephan Tesarek, is a guide across Europe, traversing the worlds of the powerful and the powerless through an age of emerging discord.

Sleeping-places for incoming refugees follow celebrations of private parties, victims of Islamic terror follow marches of neo-Fascist organizations, screenshots from entertainment shows follow hidden messages in the basement pubs of the jobless.

And as an introduction: employees of the investment bank, Lehman Brothers, in New York follow guests at a Diamond Dinner in Vienna on the evening when Lehman Brothers went bankrupt.

The period in which the photographs for Zwischenzeit (Interim) came about was from 2004 to 2010. The pictures were taken in twelve European countries, the Asian part of Russia and the United States.

The first edition of Zwischenzeit (Interim) was self-published in 2013.

On 6 December 2016, an enlarged, new edition under the title, Zwischenzeit (Interim) – Quo vadis Europa? was presented at Sala 1 in Rome along with an exhibition of 40 photographs and published for free access for nine months at ZWISCHENZEIT ONLINE /

Zwischenzeit in Rome: The Unreality of the Moment in 30+1 Images

Exhibition Opening and Book Presentation on 6 December 2016 in Rome

Zwischenzeit – Quo vadis Europa? was presented on 6 December 2016 at the Italian photography festival, Fotografia, in Rome, at a place with great suggestive power: the Galerie Sala 1, located at the Scala Santa (Holy Stairs) in Lateran. In the manner of the Zwischenzeit photographs, I have attempted to capture the Unreality of the Moment in a series of 30+1 images.

Press Reviews (First edition 2013)

“Trains of thought cast in images.”
“A master of the coded message, who demands the viewer’s attention and so grants a deep insight.”
“A disturbing documentary.”

Die Presse

“His idea of the crumbling, disintegrating interregnum on the road to destruction.”
“His magnum opus.”

Der Standard

“Much appears that is otherwise kept secret or forgotten.”
“A document of the age in which we live.”

“Totally surreal.”

“The book is a politically determined résumé.”
“Tesarek uses the medium of the photo book in its best sense in order to show in a rhythm and sequence of images how disparate image worlds, media and reality intertwine and so feed the invisible machinery of globalisation. As sparse as the details of the shots are kept, the more powerful is the effect of the sequence of images.”

“If expressions such as “Weltanschauung” and “Zeitgeist” have migrated from philosophical categories into everyday language, we can only hope that the term “Zwischenzeit” may one day be associated with the atmosphere of the early decades of the 21st century . . . ”
